The Young Authors' Contest has begun! This contest is for students in grades 2 through 5 who would like to write a short story and/or poem in their free time. The contest begins here at Longfellow where students will compete with their classmates for the best short story and poem. One short story and one poem winner will be selected from each grade level to compete at the Howard County level. Winners from Howard County will then go on to compete at the Maryland State level. Below are the contest guidelines:
Entries must be the student’s original work. Peers or adults may provide editing assistance (spelling, punctuation, etc.), but revisions should be student-generated and the final product must be the student’s own work.
All entries must be submitted in a word processing file with no less than 12 point font using either Times New Roman or Comic Sans font.
Each short story entry may range from 300 to 800 words for elementary submissions.
Each poem entry will consist of a single poem, which may be any style a range from 25 to 150 words for elementary submissions.
All entries must include a completed cover sheet signed by the student author and sponsoring teacher.
This is a wonderful opportunity for the students of Longfellow to showcase their writing talent to the Longfellow community and beyond! Students in grades 2-5 were presented with the necessary information on the contest last week and were given the guidelines and cover sheet to take home. Downloadable versions of the cover sheet and guidelines are below for your convenience. If your child would prefer to email his or her story, rather than print it, you can send all entries along with the completed cover sheet to firstname.lastname@example.org. Students have until January 8, 2016 to submit their poem and/or short story. If you have any questions, please contact email@example.com. We are looking forward to reading some amazing stories and poems. Happy writing!!
